Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I’ve never been to a Classical Pilates studio – can I still join?
Absolutely. We welcome all new clients to begin with our Intro Package (3 Private or Duet Sessions) or 3 Intro Classes (Reformer or Tower), designed to introduce you to the method safely and effectively before joining open group classes.

What exactly is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of physical training developed by Joseph Pilates nearly a century ago. Originally called Contrology, it focuses on the complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit through precise, flowing movement and conscious breath.

What does Romana’s Pilates mean?
Romana’s Pilates refers to the original lineage of Classical Pilates, passed directly from Joseph Pilates to his protégé Romana Kryzanowska. Our instructors are trained within this tradition, ensuring authenticity and precision in every session.

How do Pilates studios and classes differ from each other?
Many studios teach modern or fitness-based Pilates. At The Studio Helsinki, we teach Classical Pilates exactly as Joseph Pilates intended — on original apparatus, in a structured system, and with individual hands-on guidance.

What makes The Studio unique?
We are the only studio in Finland with instructors in the Romana’s Pilates teacher training program. Our fully equipped Classical Pilates studio offers the highest quality, authentic instruction in a refined and serene space.

What’s the difference between classical, modern, and equipment Pilates (e.g. reformer)?
Classical Pilates follows Joseph Pilates’ original sequence, rhythm, and principles across all apparatus — Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and more. Modern Pilates often adapts or simplifies the method. Equipment Pilates typically focuses on one apparatus, while Classical Pilates integrates the full system.

What kind of training do your instructors have?
All instructors at The Studio Helsinki are Romana’s Pilates apprentices, training under senior international teachers. This comprehensive program is among the most rigorous in the world, ensuring expert, safe, and hands-on teaching.

Do you play music in class?
No — Classical Pilates emphasizes concentration, rhythm, and flow guided by the instructor’s voice. The absence of music helps you connect deeply to your breath and movement.

Why can’t I start directly with a group class, even if I have experience?
Every Classical Pilates studio and instructor follows unique progressions. Our intro sessions ensure you learn the correct setup, apparatus, and foundational exercises, allowing you to join group sessions safely and confidently.

What’s the difference between mat classes and equipment classes?
Mat classes are performed on the floor using body weight and small props (hand weights and Magic Circle), while equipment classes use specialized apparatus like the Reformer and Tower, offering resistance and support for deeper, more balanced strength.

I already practice another sport – how can Pilates benefit me?
Classical Pilates improves core strength, posture, balance, flexibility and alignment, enhancing performance and preventing injuries in any sport. Many professional athletes use Pilates as a key element of their training.

Do I need any previous experience to join?
Not at all. Our intro sessions are designed for complete beginners and will guide you step by step through the method.

Can I attend classes while pregnant?
Yes, but we require starting with private sessions. This ensures your instructor can tailor exercises safely to your stage of pregnancy and individual needs.

Can I attend if I have an injury or I’m in rehabilitation?
Yes. Pilates can support recovery, but please begin with private sessions so your instructor can adapt the work specifically for you.

Do you also teach in English?
Yes, all of our instructors teach fluently in English and Finnish.

What should I wear and bring to class?
Wear comfortable, form-fitting clothes without zippers or buttons, and socks are required for hygiene and comfort. We provide small towels, water, tea, and coffee at the studio.

Can we book a private class for a group of friends?
Yes! We offer private group sessions for small groups by request — perfect for friends who wish to train together in a personalized setting.

Do you offer classes for companies or private events (e.g. bachelorette parties)?
Yes, we can tailor special sessions or events for groups and companies. Please contact us to discuss your ideas and scheduling.

Do you sell gift cards?
Yes — gift cards are available for all our classes and packages, and make a beautiful way to share the experience of Classical Pilates.

What is your cancellation policy if I get sick?
We ask for at least 24 hours’ notice for all cancellations.

Do you have changing rooms and showers?
We have changing space available, though no full showers. Our studio is designed for calm simplicity and comfort.

Can I take photos or videos during class?
To protect the privacy and focus of all clients, filming and photography are not allowed during classes.
